Cycle your water before adding fish. Once your tank is established please keep your water changes frequent and consistent. Also find yourself a good LFS (Local Fish Store) and Petco doesnt count. An LFS employee will actually know what they are talking about. Most of the time. Last but not least always do your own research...

Advice:
Above all patience is key. We took over 9 months setting this tank up including completely redecorating the room before it went in but it was all worth it. When budgeting for the new tank put plenty of money aside for ornaments. When first setting up the tank and buying the first plants and rocks we were worried on the way home that we had bought too many, how wrong could we be!!! Make the tank busy, keep the fish interested and they will be active and much more enjoyable. Final thought, keep the food interesting and varied and the fish will thrive on it.
